It influences how individuals think, feel, and behave. In Zimbabwe, mental health issues are often overlooked or misunderstood due to deep-seated cultural stigmas and a lack of adequate support structures (World Health Organization, 2023). Despite growing global awareness, the stigma surrounding mental health persists, particularly in schools, where young people are at a crucial stage of emotional and psychological development.

The Reality of Mental Health Issues in Zimbabwean Schools

Students in Zimbabwe face numerous mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Many students come from impoverished backgrounds, face food insecurity, or experience domestic violence, which significantly impacts their mental well-being (UNICEF, 2023). According to the Zimbabwe National Mental Health Strategy (2021-2025), over 15% of adolescents exhibit symptoms of anxiety and depression, yet most never seek help due to stigma and lack of mental health resources.

The Stigma Surrounding Mental Health in Zimbabwe

In many Zimbabwean communities, mental health issues are often associated with supernatural beliefs, witchcraft, or curses. As a result, individuals struggling with mental health conditions are often labelled as “mad” or “bewitched” and may be ostracized (Chibanda, 2021). Schools, where students should ideally receive support, often dismiss mental health concerns as mere disciplinary issues, further alienating affected individuals.

Consequences of Ignoring Mental Health Issues

Failure to address mental health concerns in Zimbabwean schools can lead to:

Poor academic performance due to difficulty concentrating and a lack of motivation.

Increased absenteeism, as students may avoid school due to bullying or stress.

Higher dropout rates, with students feeling overwhelmed by their emotional struggles.

Escalation of self-harm and suicide rates, with Zimbabwe seeing a rise in youth suicides linked to untreated mental health conditions (Zimbabwe National Suicide Prevention Strategy, 2022).

Substance abuse, where struggling students may turn to alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism.

The Role of MEFT in Breaking the Stigma

Mlambo Education Foundation Trust (MEFT) can play a crucial role in addressing mental health issues in Zimbabwean schools by:

Implementing Mental Health Education Programs

MEFT can collaborate with schools to incorporate mental health awareness into the curriculum, helping students understand their emotions and how to seek help.

Hosting workshops for teachers and parents to educate them on recognizing mental health issues and providing support.

Providing Access to Mental Health Resources

Partnering with mental health professionals to offer free or affordable counselling services for students.

Establishing peer-support programs where students can discuss their challenges in a safe and confidential space.

Advocating for Policy Change

Working with the Ministry of Education to integrate mental health policies into school guidelines.

Promoting anti-bullying policies with clear consequences to create a safer learning environment.

Community Engagement and Awareness Campaigns

Organizing community awareness campaigns to challenge misconceptions about mental health and encourage open conversations.

Engaging religious and traditional leaders to reshape narratives around mental health, emphasizing scientific and psychological perspectives.

Conclusion

Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health in Zimbabwean schools requires a collective effort from educational institutions, parents, and organizations like Ndinewe Foundation, MEFT , .
